Every April CAPCC honors individuals and/or organizations that are doing exceptional work in the field of child abuse prevention and intervention.  The following are our 2022 Children First recipients.

April 2022 Children First Award Recipients

Kathryn O’Malley & the Department of Health & Human Services Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) program

Department of Health & Human Services Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) program was awarded this year’s Child Abuse Prevention Coordinating Council of Humboldt County’s Children First Award for its work educating parents and strengthening families. Since NFP launched locally in 2009, more than 590 families have completed the two-year voluntary prevention program that pairs nurses with income-qualifying first-time mothers and includes home and field visits starting during the mother’s pregnancy and continuing until the child’s second birthday. For more information about the program and to self-refer, call 707-268-2105.

Seventh Generation House Inc – Fortuna, CA

Seventh Generation House is new, but they have worked tirelessly since January 2021 to help reconnect families and treat recovery issues. Trying to fill a service gap and care for not just parents, but the children’s needs also.

This agency was in danger of closing its doors due to lack of funding, but thanks to a grant provided through Humboldt Area Foundation, has been able to continue services. They would also like to thank Kym Kemp with Redheaded Blackbelt for helping to support their efforts. Last, but certainly not least, they would like to thank Captain Shellyfish Academy, a local nonprofit they are partnered with in their efforts to keep at-risk youth engaged and a part of the community.

Seventh Generation House has worked tirelessly, devoting their time and services to help keep together and reunite families. Most clients are unfunded, and their services have been provided by the staff who have been serving the greater Humboldt area on a volunteer basis. The costs to support and treat clients have been out of pocket and with dedication of time and efforts, those we would like to mention are Hank and Joy Bernard, Ruth Wortman and family, Ben Shaw and family, Stephanie Roberts, Patric Crowe, Shelly Luna, Linda Ping and Rose Baker. All of whom have been essential in the agency’s efforts to become a solid resource in this community.

We strive to help create solid foundations for families and help them build their lives back up case by case. We believe that our next generation are those who continue on the legacies of both the land and family. We don’t own the land, it is passed on to our children. The ideal of the Seventh Generation is something that is passed down, trying to help make future generations stronger. Creating a solid future for our children and our children’s children.

The last picture is special to me because it was drawn by a child who lives in our transitional living house. She showed me all of her notebooks and the art work that she does and while I was looking at her work she drew a picture of me and gave it to me before I left. I now have it on the wall in my office as inspiration and focus, to keep doing what I’m doing and a monument of focus.
